Understanding Autism
In “Understanding Autism,” parents will learn about the two key areas associated with an autism diagnosis and how these areas affect our children’s communication, self-regulation, and experiences.
Supporting Communication
This training provides information on communication challenges and differences, as well as their impact on people with autism. We will explore various forms of communication (verbal and nonverbal) and the best ways to support our children as their communication skills develop.
Visual Supports in Practice
Participants will learn how to create and use visuals to better support people with autism in increasing their independence, promoting communication, and reducing challenging behaviors at home. We will learn how to teach “waiting,” “asking for help,” and “asking for a break” using visual supports. Participants will also learn about social stories and other strategies used to explain a specific situation and provide strategies for coping with it. Finally, we’ll learn how to use a countdown timer to facilitate smooth transitions.
Support for Self-Regulation
Most people with autism experience the world in an atypical way. Some may be hypersensitive. Others are hyposensitive. Most exhibit a combination of these two sensory responses. Participants will explore the eight sensory systems and strategies to facilitate regulation.
Positive Advocacy
Having a child with special needs often means we must navigate many complex systems. We’ll explore how to build a positive team of professionals around our children. We’ll also discuss the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), what Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 plans are, and how they can benefit our children.
Toilet Training
A unique workshop offering strategies to support children of all ages.
How to Create a Safety Plan
Learn about different tools, strategies, and resources to help keep your family safe.
